Northern Ridge of Piatra Craiului Mountains

Hiking the Northern Ridge of Piatra Craiului Mountains is, for sure, one of the most popular tours. Please be aware that it’s a both physically and mentally challenge, taking into consideration the distance and altitude that we are going to change. Previous experience in mountain hiking and good fitness level are mandatory to complete the program.

Very early in the morning (around 6 am), I will meet you up in the front of Zarnesti Tourist Information and Promotion Center. After a short introduction and briefing, we’ll keep driving along the road to Fantana lui Botorog, where we’ll fill up the water bottles and leave our vehicles. From here, we will traverse the spectacular canyon of Zarnesti (Prapastiile Zarnestiului) and we will ascent to the highest summit of this massif – Piscul Baciului (2238m).

Once arrived in the ridge, during the clear days, we’ll enjoy the all around panoramas. Walking the ridge will be challenging and demanding; it will request all our attention as long as falling is not an option. We will have to pass some points by scrambling (not technical – climbing equipment is not necessary, but for safety reasons we will wear our climbing helmets).

Ascutit Peak is the intermediate point where we will make decision for the path that we will follow for descent. If we are in time, and we feel strong and confident, we will continue to Saua Padinei Inchise, and further to Curmatura mountain hut (via Lehman trail). The other option will be Padinile Frumoase trail (not an easy one), that will make our trip a bit shorter. Later in the afternoon (or early in the evening) we will be back to our vehicle: tired but happy.
